Digital Wayfinding – Sydney Fish Market

We delivered a tailored digital wayfinding software solution for Sydney Fish Market, designed to guide visitors through one of the city’s busiest and most celebrated destinations. The experience connects guests with retail stores, the information centre, restaurants, and services, while presenting content that is clear, fast, and simple to explore. A refined interface, built for a striking stretched display format, ensures every visitor can find what they need in moments.

Three digital wayfinding kiosks have been strategically installed for maximum reach and convenience. Two units are located at either end of the building to welcome and orient visitors as they arrive, and one unit sits in the middle to serve guests already exploring the market.

The unique screen format was central to this project. With a resolution of 594×3840 pixels, the display demanded a bespoke layout and interaction model that fully used the vertical canvas without overwhelming the user. We customised our software and design system to align typography, iconography, and touch targets to the tall aspect, and we optimised animations and transitions to remain smooth and responsive. The result is a focused, elegant interface that looks natural on the stretched totem and feels effortless to use.

Visitors can browse and search for retail stores, the information centre, and restaurants. Results can be filtered by category to refine the experience, including Restaurants, Bars and Cafe, Seafood and Fresh Produce, Speciality Retail, and Quick Eats. Each listing provides a clear location, concise description, and an intuitive route on the map, making it simple to navigate from any kiosk to the chosen destination.

To ensure inclusivity, the interface features an accessibility mode that lowers the primary interaction zone so controls and content are within comfortable reach for wheelchair users and children. Text scaling options improve legibility for a wide range of visitors. Multiple languages are available, including Chinese, with a prominent on screen language selector. A dedicated Information shortcut lets visitors quickly connect with the information desk whenever personal assistance is preferred.

The solution includes a flexible content management layer for fast updates to listings, categories, and maps. Live data checks and remote monitoring help ensure reliable service throughout trading hours, while analytics provide insights into popular searches and visitor needs, informing future enhancements and market operations. In addition, a third-party weather widget was integrated into the unit, enhancing the user experience with real-time local weather updates.

With three strategically placed kiosks and a purpose built interface for a tall stretched display, Sydney Fish Market now offers a polished digital wayfinding experience that reduces congestion at the information centre, speeds up decision making, and enhances visitor satisfaction. The system adapts to the venue’s unique architecture and busy foot traffic, guiding every guest to the best of the market with clarity and confidence.
